If you’re here, you’re probably into heat pumps, or at least heat pump-curious. Maybe you’d like to quit relying on gas to heat your home and water. We’re happy to report that we have some nice math to back up your good instincts.
Harvest is now the cheapest and most effective way to decarbonize your home. Cheaper to install and cheaper on your monthly bills.
Want a deeper dive? Sharpen your pencils. Here we go.
Recent innovations at Harvest mean that our systems - which will give you home heat, air conditioning, hot water, and a smart thermal battery - will be 7% cheaper than an equivalent heat pump system – a system that doesn’t even include a battery.
For a system comparison, we took average costs for high-performing heat pumps with A/C and a heat pump water heater that work with a ducted system. That system costs around $29,500 using available incentives. And that’s without a load-shifting, bill-shrinking, emissions-slashing thermal battery - the keystone that makes Harvest shine. (A heat pump system with a battery is about thirty percent more expensive than Harvest.)
You may be wondering: how does this compare to gas? A similarly-performing gas furnace and hot water heater will run you about $23,500. Harvest comes in a bit higher than that at install, but pays for the difference in cost in six years. And, you’ll sleep better at night knowing you’re doing your part in the fight against climate change.
Depending on where you live, there are also ways to get Harvest for way less upfront. If you live in Marin, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, or San Luis Obispo counties, Flexmarket incentives can bring Harvest’s install costs down by thousands, which makes Harvest even cheaper than gas. Kind of a no-brainer at that point.
Are there caveats? Yes, but nothing crazy! You’ll need to have enough tax liability to take advantage of credits, and, like anything else, you’ll want to check with your accountant to make sure you qualify.
You may be thinking: then why aren’t we already in everyone’s home? We’re wondering the same thing, and that’s why we wrote this blog. `
Talk to you soon?
*To get here, we crunched 17,000 bits of data from TECH Clean California, the state rebate program that collects data from HVAC installers who install heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. We combined that with our own data on gas systems.
